NFVF call for proposals for female filmmaker project
The concept for the Female Only Filmmaker Project is to provide female writer/ director teams from the industry, particularly those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, with an opportunity to make a film in collaboration with other women. We are looking for writer/director teams who can come with a strong idea /concept / script, to be developed either as part of a writer/director team or on their own as a writer/director. The applicants will be guided in the development of their stories into 24 minute scripts over a period of 5 months.
Call for proposals for NFVF first time filmmaker project
The National Film and Video Foundation have opened a call for proposals for first time filmmakers to make their first films. The First Time Filmmaker Project is to provide recent film school graduates from historically disadvantaged backgrounds with an opportunity to make their first professional film. Successful writers or directors will be guided in the development of their stories for 12-15 minute scripts for a fiction film over a period of 5 months.

11 February 2013: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will on the 14th of February embark on a trip to Los Angeles to represent South African film at the 21st Annual Pan African Film Festival (PAFF). Dedicated to the promotion of cultural and racial tolerance, and understanding through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression, PAFF commenced on the 7th of February and will end on the 18th of February 2013.
66th Cannes International Film Festival – Call for project submissions to the NFVF
08 February 2013: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will embark on a trip to the 66th Cannes International Film Festival being held from the 15th to the 26th of May 2013. The festival, which is internationally recognised as the premier film festival and marketing event, brings together filmmakers and key decision makers from across the globe to conduct the business of film.

The NFVF on a study of the economic impact of the local film industry
04 December 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has commissioned a baseline study on the economic impact of the film industry in South Africa. The study, conducted by Deloitte & Touche, is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2013.

16 November 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation in partnership with the Durban Film Office (DFO) will host a two-day workshop targeting aspiring film makers in Durban to provide skills and training as part of its mandate to develop the South African film and video industry.
South Africa takes 22 documentary projects to IDFA
12 November 2012: South Africa is taking 22 local documentary projects to the 25th International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA), 13 of these have been supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). In addition, two NFVF supported projects, Devil’s Lair and The Dream of Shahrazad have also been invited to pitch at the festival.

12 November 2012: The judging process for the 7th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) commenced on Thursday 08th of November, with filtration of all the qualifying submitted projects.

12 October 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) congratulates Man on Ground for winning the Best South African Film at the 10th Tri Continental Film Festival (TCFF). This year's festival, which exclusively bases its awards on audience votes, took place from the 7th to the 23rd of September 2012 in Johannesburg, Soweto, Pretoria and Cape Town.

The France – South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013 is a multifaceted bilateral collaboration between France and South Africa, concluded last year by the heads of states of France and South Africa.

02 October 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will for the 2nd time participate at the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) through running the NFVF Macufe Film Week. The initiative is a partnership between NFVF and Macufe meant at "taking film and cinema to the people". The event will run from Tuesday 09 until 13 October 2012 at Muse Pacofs. Little One selected to represent South Africa for consideration into the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 85th Oscars
28 September 2012: The South African Academy Award Selection Committee and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announce the selection of "Little One" for consideration as South Africa’s official entry into the Best Foreign Film category for the 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars). If approved by the Oscars Academy Award Selection Committee, the film will represent South Africa as the nominee for the 85th Oscars to be held in 2013.
National Film & Video Foundation and Department of Arts Culture host Women & Youth Heritage Indaba
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), in association with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) on Tuesday 25th of September 2012 hosted the Women & Youth Heritage Indaba. The event was held in commemoration of the women and youth of South Africa, in the process celebrating heritage. It was hosted following the call to the industry to apply for the women and youth projects, which will provide 10 women and 10 youths an opportunity to make film for the first time.
Deadline for the submission of entries for the 7th annual SAFTAs EXTENDED
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has extended the closing date for the call for local production companies to submit their entries for the 7th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs). The closing date has been extended to Thursday the 27th of September 2012 at 16h00 with a penalty fee of R350.00 per entry. The penalty fee will be payable for all the entries that will be received after the initial closing date which was the 20th of September 2012.
NFVF concludes second round of Industry consultations for the South African film criteria
10 September 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) concluded the second round of industry consultations in June and July 2012. The sessions were held in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, bringing finality to the public consultation process.

South Africa to celebrate its talent at the 33rd Durban International Film Festival
13 July 2012: Durban is set to come under the spotlight as all eyes of the film world will be on the city for the 33rd Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) which is taking place from the 19th to the 29th of July 2012. DIFF, the country’s biggest and longest running film festival, is supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
33rd Durban International Film Festival launches
29 June 2012: The countdown to the 33rd Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is on following the Johannesburg launch of the festival that took place at the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) offices on Thursday the 28th of June 2012. This year’s DIFF is scheduled to take place from the 19th to the 29th of July 2012 in Durban and the NFVF, the statutory body mandated to spearhead the development of local film industry, is one of the major partners of the festival.

20 June 2012: The 14th Encounters International Documentary Festival is currently underway in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The Africa's most prestigious documentary festival, which is supported by the National Film and Video Foundation as its primary sponsor, commenced on the 7th of June 2012 and will run until the 24th of June 2012.
South Africa goes to AFCI locations expo, participates at the BRICS Summit
13 June 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will lead the South African delegation to the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) locations expo that is scheduled to take place from the 15th to the 16th of June 2012 in Los Angeles. This is the 10th year South Africa is taking part in the AFCI locations expo, with the aim of promoting and marketing the country as a filming destination of choice.

23 May 2012: The National Film and Video Foundation on Monday 21st of May hosted a co-production forum at the SA Pavilion. This was the first time the country held this event at the Cannes Festival.

20 May 2012: Minister of the Department of Arts and Culture, Minister Paul Mashatile and his Ireland counterpart Minister Jimmy Deenihan T.D. today signed a co-production treaty that will provide the two countries access to filmmaking opportunities.

17 May 2012: The 65th Cannes International Film festival opened last night with the premiere of Wes Anderson’s coming-of-age love story ‘Moonrise Kingdom’. The festival is taking place in Cannes, France until 27th of May 2012.

10 May 2012: The Documentary Filmmakers Association (DFA) delegation to Hot Docs 2012 has just returned from Toronto and delegates have headed home to Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Durban. The 16-strong delegation was the biggest at Hot Docs, and stood out at the festival.

17 April 2012: Two South African documentaries, Sands of the Skei Queen by Ryley Grunenwald and Buddha of Africa by Nicole Schafer are set to shine at this year’s Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival scheduled to take place from the 26th of April to the 6th of May 2012. Founded in 1993, Hot Docs is North America’s largest documentary festival, conference, and market held annually in Toronto, Canada. Each year South Africa’s documentaries are showcased and represented by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), and individual producers.

The South African Academy Award Selection Committee and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announce the selection of Life, Above All for consideration as South Africa’s official entry into the Best Foreign Film category for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards (Oscars). If approved by the Oscars Academy Award Selection Committee, it will represent South Africa as the nominee for Oscars 2011.

Father Christmas Doesn’t Come Here, a short film directed by Bhekumuzi Sibiya, has been selected for the 2010 Palm Spring International Short Festival. Produced by Jeremy Nathan and Michelle Wheatley of DV8, the film was one of the Indigenous Language short film contest winners funded by the National Film and Video Foundation. The film will be screened between 22 and 28 June 2010, at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, CA.

The crème de la crème of South African Film and Television industry gathered at the State Theatre to witness as the best in the country received honour for their creative excellence. The show was broadcast live on SABC 2 from 20:00.
NFVF takes 412 grade 12 learners to view SKIN
The National Film and Video Foundation took four hundred and twelve (412) grade 12 learners to view SKIN on Thursday 11 February 2010, as part its ‘taking cinema to the people’ initiative. Disadvantaged schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape were treated to an all expense paid trip to the cinema, where the NFVF staff members were at hand to welcome the learners and interact with them.
NFVF takes the film Skin to underprivileged schools
The National Film and Video Foundation will this week promote the movie "Skin" among grade 12 pupils from disadvantaged areas in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, as part of its audience development programme. The campaign is a pilot programme that will be extended to other regions in the future.
Skin wins South African audiences at the box office
Skin, a true-life story about South Africa's Sandra Laing, accumulated R194.151 at the box office during it’s first weekend of release (22 – 24 January) making it the number one film on he Cinema Nouveau circuit. The figure was recorded after the film was released only in selected cinemas (eleven prints) around the country. As of 28th January,Thursday night, Skin had registered R288,000.
Skin nominated for Best Foreign Film at the NAACP Awards
Skin, a true-life story about South Africa’s Sandra Laing has been nominated for Best Foreign Film award at the NAACP Image Awards, while Sophie Okonedo, who plays the role of Sandra Laing in the film, has been nominated for the Outstanding Actress award.

National Film School Study
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has completed a feasibility study for the establishment of a National Film School. This was in response to Section 4 (2) e of the NFVF act, which calls for the investigation into the establishment of film school in collaboration with the Department of Education, and of Trade and Industry.
