The Cape Film Commission created the Imbongi Awards to recognize the hard work and professional approach of individuals and companies within the Western Cape’s film industry. The 3rd Annual Imbongi Awards was held on Saturday, 6 March, 2010, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Clockwork Zoo walked away with the "Excellence in Animation" award as well as the "Best Contribution to Skills Development and Transformation" award.
"We have grown from a team of six people who had a dream to produce a weekly half-hour animated series for the SABC called URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika to being the largest studio in Africa in just five years," says Sean Rogers, MD and Head of Animation.
The team of 114 animation staff in Cape Town and Johannesburg are working on content that will be seen by millions of children around the world in shows like Caillou with Cookie Jar Entertainment and Florrie's Dragons for Disney UK.
Yet in an industry that has a limited skills pool, empowerment through animation training and skills development is a pressing concern. Clockwork Zoo has been a staunch supporter of the Animation Industry Development Initiative since its inception.
"We were the first company to host interns in 2009. We are the biggest trainers in Toon Boom software in the country, having trained 74 animators in the past six months," says Vince Gibbons, Clockwork Zoo CEO.
Clockwork Zoo have a strong internship programme for animation students who work part time in addition to their studies, serve as a resource for schools and aspirant students of animation and have a vibrant on-the-job skills development programme in their live shows division, specializing in live studio television production.
Cape Town and the Western Cape have, over the past 10 years, developed into a globally competitive film industry destination. The Awards were open to individuals and companies within the Film, TV, Stills, Animation, Documentary, Corporate and Promotional Video and Advertising sectors.
