SABC and Arte France share views on the state of industry at DIFF

The SABC Content Hub Department represented by Khethiwe Ngcobo, and Arte France met with filmmakers on Monday 26th of July at the Durban International Film Festival. The purpose of the workshop was to share views about the state of the TV production industry in South Africa.

Issues discussed included the Intellectual Property; licensing, quantitative and qualitative research conducted by the SABC, the public broadcaster mandate in comparison with private broadcasters.

Pierre Merle, commissioning editor for Drama department for Arte France was on hand to share, amongst others information on how the France commissioning brief process is implemented.

To continue on the discussions held at DIFF, filmmakers are invited to participate in a gathering of broadcasters to share views about the state of the TV production industry.

The event will take place on Thursday 29th of July from 10am until 5pm at the Alliance Francaise of Johannesburg, 17 Kerry Road, Cnr Lower Park Drive Parkview Johannesburg.

The day will be divided in two sessions:
Morning – Enhancing the relationship between broadcaster and independent producer.
Presentations by 3 representatives of SABC, SASFED, and Arte France. Rehad Desai will be the moderator.

The afternoon session (panel discussion) - In the context of the newly signed co-production treaties: Exploring the universe of co-production.
Issues to be tackled include:

  • Impact on quality: Gains and losses.
  • Finding the right co-producer.
  • What qualifies as a co-production? Some of the broad strokes.
