Film exists because of the imperfection of the human eye. Ingmar Bergman in his exceptional essay: What is making a film? explains eloquently that it is due to the perforated film strip composed of small rectangular images fifty-two to the meter which are separated from its neighbours by a black band and when fed through the projector as a series of successive images at only one twenty-fourth of a second, creates the illusion of movement. There was no Best Actress Award in the Feature Film category at this year's South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTAs). It has been suggested that the 10 films entered in the SAFTAs, were predominantly male driven stories. South Africa, however, is no different to elsewhere in the world where there is a dearth of strong female leads.
