What makes documentaries different to fiction? John Grierson, a Scottish documentary filmmaker gave a definitive explanation in 1926. Grierson's principles of documentary were that cinema's potential for observing life could be exploited in a new art form and that unlike fiction where there is an actor and a ‘story’, a documentary interprets the world and captures the subject from the real world. Little One, a film directed by Darrell Roodt and produced by Anton Ernst, was selected by the South African Academy Award Selection committee and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) for consideration as South Africa's official entry for best foreign film at this years Academy Awards. While it has unfortunately not made the short list it is still a great achievement to be considered for the Oscars by South Africa. By Karen van Schalkwyk.
