Born in Holland in 1958, Menno Boerema grew up in Rome, Italy from the age of six. At 18 he started working as an editing assistant to Rudolfo Palermi (Folco Quilici's editor) and also worked for one of the first commercial (non state) televisions in Rome (doing everything from cleaning, nightwatch, cameraman and directing) In 1978 he went to study at the Dutch Film Academy and upon graduating he went to the Centro Sperimentale di Cinema in Rome for a post graduate year.
In Amsterdam he studied with Ton de Graaff and in Rome with Roberto Perpigniani. Upon returning to Amsterdam he started working as a freelance editor on numerous fiction and non fiction films, (working with Directors like Johan van der Keuken. Hugo Claus, Heddy Honigmann ) In the past few years he has been working on projects as varied as Steps for the future (in South Africa) Lucanamarca (in Peru) and Why Democracy (in India).
Since 1998 he has been teaching at the Dutch film school and has lectured in many countries around the world. He is also an advisor to the Dutch cultural stimuleringsfonds for films and among his prices there are two Golden Calves, (first in 1998 for the bulk of his work from 1983 to 1998, and another golden calve for the film Jungle Rudy in 2006. In 2006 Menno completed the edit on Bushman’s Secret, directed and Produced by Rehad Desai. Previously to this collaboration he was the consulting editor on Rehad’s Born Into Struggle.
