Members of the fi lm and video community and the general public are hereby invited to nominate members for Council of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), as per requirement of the National Film and Video Foundation Act, 1997 (Act 73 of 1997). The Council will consist of no fewer than nine and no more than fourteen members.

The Council of the National Film and Video Foundation has, in terms of 21(1)(b) of the National
Film and Video Foundation Act, 1997 (Act No. 73 of 1997), with the approval of the Minister of
Arts and Culture, made the regulations set out in the Schedule.
The National Film and Video Foundation invites interested parties to submit written comments on the proposed Definition of a South African Film. The objective of the Definition of a South African Film is to set criteria for the assessment of whether a film is South African.

The South African box office market continues to undergo change. With more
exhibition houses opening their doors for business and distributors competing for
content; there is not telling what the final impact will be, although all expectation is
that all such developments are roadways to greater prospects.
The National Film and Video Foundation have published its 2nd Trimester Box Office report for the review period from 29th of April until 31st of August 2011. The purpose of the report is to observe and provide insight about the current trends and developments in the South African box office market.
2009 SAFTA Nominees Announced
20 February 2011: Winners of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS) were announced today at an award ceremony held at Madame Zingara's Theatre of Dreams. The event was hosted by South Africa’s popular personalities Thami Ngubeni and Joey Rasdien.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), would like to remind South African productions to submit their entries for SAFTAS 2011. The closing date for submission is Friday the 16th of July 2010 at 16h00. The Feature Film and Life Time Achievement category entries will close on the 31st of December 2010.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), official organizers of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS) calls for South African productions to submit their entries for SAFTAS 2011. 21 July 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) in partnership with the KwaMashu Community Advancement Projects (KCAP) last night opened the newly refurbished Ekhaya Theatre. The theatre has been refurbished as part of the NFVF project of installing digital screens in rural and township areas.

Father Christmas Doesn’t Come Here selected for the Palm Spring International Shortfest.
Father Christmas Doesn’t Come Here, a short film directed by Bhekumuzi Sibiya, has been selected for the 2010 Palm Spring International Short Festival. Produced by Jeremy Nathan and Michelle Wheatley of DV8, the film was one of the Indigenous Language short film contest winners funded by the National Film and Video Foundation. The film will be screened between 22 and 28 June 2010, at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, CA.

25 January 2011: The South African Academy Awards Selection Committee and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) learned with disappointment that Life Above All has not made the final cut for the 83rd Oscars awards by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
24 January 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation congratulate the makers of the South African feature film Life Above All, for advancing to the top nine of the 83rd Academy Awards. The film, together with eight other films from other countries qualify to be in the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category.

18 August 2011: Mukunda Michael Dewil's riveting thriller, Retribution will have its cinematic release tomorrow at cinemas nationwide. Starring Joe Mafela and Jeremy Crutchley the film had its first premiere at the Durban International Film Festival in July.

30 August 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation has extended the deadline for its 2011 Short Film Competition to Friday 16th of September 2011. Filmmakers can still submit short film scripts of any genre, in an indigenous language and/ or be written by women.
In 2007, the National Film and Video Foundation sent out a call to up and coming young filmmakers to submit short film scripts in any genre but with two stipulations - the films had either to be in an indigenous language and or be written and directed by women.
15 December 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation is happy to announce that at its meeting on the 7th of December 2011 the council of the NFVF approved the awarding of slate funds to three deserving production companies, each with unique propositions which attracted the highest scores from the evaluation panel convened to assess them.
31 January 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is happy to announce that the South African Government has heeded its call for an increase in its budget allocation. The additional budget allocation is R135 218 000 allocated for the MTEF period 2011 -2013.
The National Film and Video Foundation took four hundred and twelve (412) grade 12 learners to view SKIN on Thursday 11 February 2010, as part its ‘taking cinema to the people’ initiative. Disadvantaged schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape were treated to an all expense paid trip to the cinema, where the NFVF staff members were at hand to welcome the learners and interact with them.
The National Film and Video Foundation will this week promote the movie "Skin" among grade 12 pupils from disadvantaged areas in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, as part of its audience development programme. The campaign is a pilot programme that will be extended to other regions in the future.
30 August 2011: On Wednesday 24th of August the National Film and Video Foundation took three youngsters to a filming set of Vehicle 19. The three, two students, both NFVF bursary recipients and one Advanced producer's programme participant had a valuable experience that will help them during their studies.

20 June 2011: Otelo Burning, a coming of age drama film directed by Sara Blecher has been selected as the Opening Night film at the 32nd Durban International Film Festival. The festival will take place from 21st to 31st of July 2011.

20 July 2011: Local film Retribution is to premiere at the 32nd edition of the Durban International Film Festival on 22 July 2011 at Nu Metro Cinecentre Suncoast. The festival, running from 21st until 31st of July in Durban is a platform for local and international films to attract buyers and financiers.
The nominees for the South African Film and Television Awards were announced today at an event held at Johannesburg’s Atlas Studios. Both members of the industry and the local media attended the event.

Skin, a true-life story about South Africa’s Sandra Laing has been nominated for Best Foreign Film award at the NAACP Image Awards, while Sophie Okonedo, who plays the role of Sandra Laing in the film, has been nominated for the Outstanding Actress award.

Skin, a true-life story about South Africa's Sandra Laing, accumulated R194.151 at the box office during it’s first weekend of release (22 – 24 January) making it the number one film on he Cinema Nouveau circuit. The figure was recorded after the film was released only in selected cinemas (eleven prints) around the country. As of 28th January,Thursday night, Skin had registered R288,000.

27 October 2011: South Africa and New Zealand governments have signed a co-production agreement which will benefit the creative industries in both countries. The agreement which came to effect on the 20th of October 2011 follows the success of 2009 blockbuster District 9, produced by New Zealand's Peter Jackson and directed by South Africa's Neill Blomkamp.

20 February 2010: Winners of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS) were announced tonight at a glittering award ceremony that took place at the State Theatre in Pretoria. The crème de la crème of South African Film and Television industry gathered at the State Theatre to witness as the best in the country received honour for their creative excellence. The show was broadcast live on SABC 2 from 20:00.

The council members were inaugurated last night at an event held at the NFVF offices, the home of film development in South Africa.

10 May 2011: The 13th Encounters Documentary Film festival opened last night with the premier of the 80 minute documentary film, Whatever Happened to Robert Mugabe directed by Capetonian Simon Bright. The opening night, well attended by local and international filmmakers was held at the NuMetro, V&A Waterfront.

The Bang Bang Club is a powerful real life story about four remarkable young men, photographers, friends and rivals who were sometimes banded together to lessen the danger as they covered the violence that erupted in the township of Thokoza in 1994 when the first democratic elections in South African were held.

The festival has been scheduled to take place from 21st to 22nd of July in Durban.

16 May 2011: The Hollywood Reporter in association with Agoralumiere International today held a reception in honour of NFVF CEO Eddie Mbalo. The event, attended by the who’s who of the international film industry professionals, was held at the Hollywood Reporter Pavilion at the Cannes International Film Festival in France.
27 October 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is proud to announce that Mukunda Michael Dewil’s riveting thriller Retribution was the opening film of the Bojanala Film Week. Boasting stellar performances by legendary entertainer Joe Mafela and Jeremy Crutchley and distributed by the NFVF the thriller received soaring admiration from guests who attended the launch in anticipation to a successful film week. The film week runs until Saturday 29th of October 2011.
13 October 2011:The judging process for the 6th annual South African Film and Television Awards began on a positive note with the pre judging session held at the NFVF offices on the 12th of October 2011.
29 September 2011: The NFVF continues in its mandate of promoting and developing the South African Film industry. 27 June 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will from the 05th until 10th of July participate at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Now in its 37th year and scheduled to run from the 30th of June until 10th of July, the festival attracts a strong participation from artists countrywide, as well as international artists. The NFVF will be stationed at the Hands On! Masks Off! Eden Grove, venue in Somerset Street.
14 May 2011: Keeping to its objectives of promoting South Africa as a premiere filmmaking destination and positioning it as a co-production partner of choice and providing support to local filmmakers, the NFVF will tonight present South African film projects to international buyers, sales agents, distributors festival programmes and financiers at the Rado Pladge.
09 February 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the South African Screen Federation (SASFED) today signed an agreement that sets out the terms of engagement between the two organisations.
15 September 2011: The National Film and Video Foundation concluded the final leg of its Financing Producers Programme 2011 on the 09th of September. The programme, aimed at offering focused training in international financing packaging, sales and distribution to the local filmmakers was a resounding success.
28 April 2011: The National Film and Video foundation will from the 28th of April until 08th of May, 2011 participate in and support filmmakers attending the North America's largest documentary festival, Hot Docs. The festival each year presents over 200 films from more than 43 countries and welcomes hundreds of international filmmakers and industry delegates to Toronto.

01 August 2011: The 32nd Durban international Film Festival (DIFF) took place from Thursday 21st until yesterday 31st of July 2011. At the beginning of the festival the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announced its support for an array of feature films, shorts and documentaries that were to be exhibited at the festival. It is with great pleasure the NFVF announce that two of the projects exhibited at DIFF won various top awards.
At a meeting held on 2nd September 2010 on the occasion of the 3rd cycle meeting of the NFVF Council, NFVF management recommended funding across the usual range of programmes and projects the institution supports.

The National Film and Video Foundation, invites filmmakers to submit short film scripts to be considered for the 2011 NFVF Short Film Competition. The short film scripts can be in any genre but have to either be in an indigenous language and/ or be written by women.
This programme aims to inspire an approach to screenwriting that celebrates invention and creativity so that participants may pursue fresh and original takes on themes. Feature film screenwriters and script editors are trained together on the course.

It is quite startling to think that we've known each other for 17 years, but only became professionally involved in 1995/96 when your company, Dynamic Images, my company, Kurira Films and two other black owned and managed companies came together to purchase a 4 storey building near Ellis Park stadium with the dream of turning it into a studio with post-production facilities and regular work from each of the companies. We wanted to demonstrate that when given an opportunity black producers could run sustainable businesses.
