A musical cantata is used to tell the story of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission ten years on.

Synopsis

In 2006 South African composer, Philip Miller, created a cantata to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Using shards of recorded testimony from the TRC hearings Philip integrated these voices into his work as libretto and as part of the music.

Voice inflections, sounds of sighs, murmers, gasps all make up the fabric of the work. "Rewind" tells the story of the development of this music and is a bricolage of interviews with survivors and families of victims whose stories were used in the work as well as landscape, news archive and the Market Theatre performance of "Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony". Starring world-renowned mezzo soprano Sibongile Khumlao, “Rewind” looks at the preservation of memory in music.
