The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) invites final-year animation students to submit character designs inspired by lead characters from any South African film. This programme offers students the opportunity to showcase their artwork at MIFA and network with fellow students from international animation institutions.
Background:
The NFVF is a statutory body mandated to drive the equitable growth and development of the South African film and video industry. To advance skills development, growth, and competitiveness, the NFVF will showcase student artwork from across South Africa at the International Animation Film Market (MIFA), the premier global animation festival.
The Annecy International Animated Film Festival and MIFA is the world’s leading animation festival and market, taking place from June 8 – 14, 2025, in Annecy, France.

Celebrating African Heroes and Legends
The NFVF invites students to develop original character designs inspired by historical figures, cultural icons, or everyday heroes within South African society, reimagine them in a unique animation style that reflects their artistic vision.
Submission Format:
- Digital format
- Full resolution A4 in JPEG/PDF
- The artwork will form part of the South African Pavilion branding at MIFA
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents
- Must be final-year students enrolled in an animation or film-related course
- Must be registered at an accredited institution
Required Documents:
- One-page letter of motivation
- Certified ID copy (valid for 3 months)
- Latest academic results (Official Transcript)
- Certified copy of passport (valid for 3 months)
Funding Support:
The NFVF will cover the following costs:
- Flights
- Accommodation
- Daily allowance
- Accreditation
