PRESS RELEASE 29 JUNE 2020

First ever online youth film festival

For immediate release

FILM INDUSTRY BODIES ANNOUNCE THE FIRST-EVER SOUTH AFRICAN ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL CURATED FOR THE YOUTH.

The Digital Online Youth Film Festival produced and organized by the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC), National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Film & Publication Board (FPB) are proud to announce the collaboration to curate the first-ever Online Youth Film Festival in celebration of Youth Month 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The online festival will allow more than 100 youth-made films, with times ranging from 1 to 30 minutes but not longer than 1 hour to showcase their content and allow audiences to understand different South African youth-lived experiences through an artistic lens and expression.

Films with the most views stand a chance to win a share of more than R40 000 in audiovisual equipment. The biggest considerations were to ensure a fair process for all entrants and in doing so, will be uploading films over three days, giving each film 72 hours of viewership on the GFC YouTube platform. The festival competition will run until Sunday, midnight, and winners will be announced on the 30th of June 2020.

“We chose the YouTube platform specifically, for everyone to be part of this experience from anywhere in the world, to watch in the comfort of their homes 24/7” added GFC’s Desmond Mthembu.

The festival is inviting all South Africans and the global community to support and celebrate our young filmmakers. To access the festival, go to youtube.com/c/GautengFilmCommissionTV and subscribe, click on the bell, share and watch as many films and stand a chance to WIN 5GB of data by participating.
