The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is pleased to announce that the call for film festivals and markets attendance is now open for festivals or markets taking place from 13 May 2024.
The grant aims to provide financial support for South African filmmakers and industry practitioners to attend local and international film festivals and markets. The purpose is to ensure that they may promote their films and television products, share their expertise and promote the South African film industry.
Application Criteria:
- Attendance of a film workshop
- Screening of a project
- Participation in the festival or market competition
- Nomination for an award
- Invitation to participate in a panel discussion.
- Pitching of a film at festival or market
Funding Caps:
- International Film and Markets attendance – R50 000.00
- Local (South Africa) Film and Markets attendance – R 20 000.00
Specific conditions are applicable for each funding category, and it is important for applicants to take careful note of these conditions before applying.
Project support is limited to:
- Two (2) international and two (2) local festivals or markets per financial year, per applicant; and
- One (1) representative per project per festival or market.
Individual support is limited to:
- One (1) international and one (1) local festival or market per financial year

- Do not submit your application if the festival or market has not made the official announcement of its programme.
- Applications that do not meet compliance will be disqualified.
Tier breakdown:
Tier 1: Experienced filmmakers who have a proven track record for developing and producing 3-5 theatrically released feature films.
Tier 2: Filmmakers with limited experience but who have developed and produced 1-2 theatrical feature films, television fiction, documentaries, 2-3 short films and/or commercials seeking to venture into feature film development and production.
Tier 3: New entrants into the industry, particularly recent film school graduates from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. This intervention is geared towards first time filmmakers having a “calling card” in the film industry. This tier is only eligible for short film funding.
Documentation Required:
- Detailed profile of the festival or market
- A one-to-two-page motivation letter highlighting a link to the NFVF’s objectives and the benefits of attending the festival.
- An invitation letter from the festival or market – Compulsory if applying for 1) screening 2) pitching 3) in competition or 4) or panel participation
- An itinerary with confirmed meetings – Compulsory if pitching a film project
- Festival or market workshops programme – Compulsory if applying for film workshop attendance
- A synopsis of the project – Compulsory if taking a film project
- A poster of the project – Compulsory if taking a film project
- FPB distributors certificate
- An updated CV of the applicant
- A certified copy of an applicant’s South African Identity Document (dated within six months at the date of application)
- A bank account confirmation letter (dated within 3 months at the date of application)
- A certified copy of the company’s registration document if applying through a production company (dated within six months at the date of application)
- The BBBEE Certificate or the BBBEE Affidavit, signed by a Commissioner of Oaths if applying through a production company
- The company’s tax clearance certificate or tax compliance pin document from SARS if applying through a production company
