Mokopi Shale began her career in the media as a radio drama actress in 1998, while in the process of completing her degree in drama and industrial psychology at Rhodes University. It was through her radio drama acting that she was presented with an opportunity to become a television presenter for Take 5, a youth educational magazine programme for the SABC, where she also worked as a researcher and scriptwriter, and later as Associate Producer for the show.
In an endeavour to increase her skills in the field, she took on another job as a radio producer for TranxAfrica Media, which was in its fledgling stages and produced two programmes for them – Your Life and African Pioneers. After a stint as the Corporate Accounts Manager for Ochre Moving Pictures. Mokopi was approached to become a Commissioning Editor in the drama unit of the SABC’s Content Enterprises, where she managed dramas like Generations, the miniseries Entabeni and Ubizo which were popular dramas developed using the Sediba methodology of the Shakespeare in Mzansi mini-series slate, The Lab, Home Affairs, and Zone 14. She was later promoted to Head of Story in charge of the projects The Commandments, Mini-series Slate, and many other high concept projects. During her tenure as Head of Story SABC Dramas enjoyed critical acclaim, drew in mass audiences in excess of 60 percent audience share, and brought in massive advertising revenue for the SABC.
Mokopi worked for two years as a freelance writer for Generations, a popular local soap. During this time she also wrote three romance novels, Love’s Courage, A prince for me, and Written in the stars that was published through Sapphire press an imprint of Kwela books.
Mokopi later started Fuze Films which was awarded the contract for the slate of Films by the NFVF and was instrumental in writing Box Office Hit – Mrs Right Guy under this slate, which was the fourth highest grossing film at the South African box office in 2016. She wrote and produced Love Lives Here which is the second film produced under this slate, which is due for release in September 2018.
Over the last two years, Mokopi has also worked as Script Editor on the popular SABC 2 Thriller Thola, edited and was Headwriter on audience favourite Mfolozi Street which has enjoyed two seasons on SABC 1, with audiences upwards of 6million viewers. She was also headwriter for It’s Complicated a 13 part drama for Mzansi Magic, produced under Fuzebox Productions. She Series Produced Phola Cherrie/Tsotsi a docu-reality format for SABC Reversioning Unit, and designed and created Mokapelo which is an interventionist docu-reality format that is currently in it’s 5th season on SABC 1. Mokopi also works as an independent Feature Film Script Editor for the NFVF.
