“Every little girl out there who has felt different because they are not what society expects them to be will realise, they are so wildly capable, just like I am.” – Mia Le Roux.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) would like to invite people living with disabilities to submit proposals for short fiction or documentary films for the anthology Not What Society Expects and the unique interpretations of the theme.
The call seeks to award funding to four stand-alone short fiction and documentary concepts to the value of up to R250 000,00 (Two Hundred Thousand Rand Only) each for the production in keeping with the theme of “Not What Society Expects”. The final film to be produced by each successful applicant will be a duration of 5 -10 minutes.
Background:
People with disabilities currently account for +/- 7% of the population aged 5 years and older in South Africa. People with disabilities continue to lack access to adequate health and basic education and are at risk of economic isolation with limited prospects of securing employment. The sector is also particularly vulnerable to the compounded effects of discrimination and abuse.
South Africa celebrates National Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between 3 November and 3 December. 3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is also celebrated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day. The Disability Awareness Month offers an opportunity for all of us to remove these barriers and to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities through concrete action
